Mud, Sweat & Gears was formed in March 2005 by a handful of unfit and overweight guys who wanted to improve their health before it was too late.

We regularly meet on Saturday mornings in the Belair National Park for rides on the many roads and bike paths in this magnificent park, finishing with coffee at one of the local cafés. Our emphasis is fun and fitness. We aim to encourage new riders, while continuing to challenge the more advanced.

Some of our more enthusiastic riders venture to Mount Lofty Summit at 7.30am, returning to join the others for the 9am ride.

While most of our riders have mountain bikes, some also have road bikes, so we try to schedule special “roadie rides” at least once a month.

Our riders range in age from 11 to 82, with every decade represented. The past few years has seen many friendships established and many kilograms abandoned.

Many of our riders attend the Blackwood Hills Baptist Church, which supports and encourages our club.

In January 2007 we had a team of 12 take part in the Tour Down Under Challenge Tour, starting at Stirling (128km) or Ashbourne (84km) and finishing at Victor Harbor. This was a new experience for most of us and way out of our comfort zone.

The following year we had a team of 22 take part, starting at Mannum (134km) or Woodside (77km) and finishing at Strathalbyn. This was quite a challenge for our team, but everybody completed the course without incident.

In 2009 our team grew to 45, starting at Burnside (155km), Mt Pleasant (97km) or Angaston (32km) and finishing at Angaston.

This year we had another good contingent, starting at Norwood (160km), Woodside (111km) or Milang (35km) and finishing at Goolwa.
